American Legion Tennessee Post 64 was named in honor of Lt. Robert F. Mitchell on June 5th 2000.

 Greene County, TN is the hometown of Lt. Robert F. Mitchell. Lt. Mitchell was enrolled in law school in New York City when he got his draft notice for the Army. Our Post took his name as a way of remembering this World War 1 Veteran from Greeneville, TN. Lt. Mitchell left 80 letters behind to a young lady that he met in New York. The last letter was written just days prior of his death in the trenches of France. Lt. Mitchell was 23 years of age when he fell. Lt. Mitchell was attached with the 328 Infantry Regiment during WW1. His engagements were: Larraine, Muese-Argonne, and Champagne. He was killed in action on May 18, 1918. He is buried in an American cemetery in France.
